Nick Dal Santo

Introduction and Early Life

Nick Dal Santo is a professional Australia Rules footballer in the Australian Football League (AFL). He currently plays for the St. Kilda Football Club and was born on February 22, 1984; he is about 1.85 metres tall and weighs about 84kg in weight. He plays in the midfield position and wears number 26 of the club’s official team jersey. In the 2001 national AFL draft Nick was selected with the number thirteen priority pick.

Early Football Career

Nick started his early football career at the Bendigo Pioneers, from where he was drafted to St. Kilda. Dal Santo was able to make his debut with St. Kilda Football Club in 2002 after he was drafted during the 2001 national draft. His first game was against Geelong Football Club and first season at St. Kilda was basically a season for growth and acclimatising himself with playing in a tougher competition. The club could not achieve much that year but still Nick played eighteen matches that year. The turning point for his football career eventually came in round fifteen of the 2003 season. Nick was able to establish himself in the team as a force to reckon with in the midfield position and ever since has been improving from one level to another with his game getting better with each passing match.

Professional Football Career/Achievements

Nick Dal Santo featured in St. Kilda’s team that won the 2004 Wizard Home Loans Cup which happened to be the club’s second AFL Cup win. The outstanding performance displayed by Dal Santo made a former Essendon Football Club describe or likened to him to Ian Stewart who had won the Brownlow Awards for three times. By this time, he began to attract praises and accolades of fans as a result of his outstanding performances. He was able to feature in all the matches of the season kicking about eleven goals. The following season of 2005 has been considered as a turning point in his career because of the strides he made in his performances. He was able to grab about five hundred disposals and he finished the season in third position in the Brownlow medal chart. He was also selected to join the All Australian team where he would play in the midfield position. This happened to be his first All Australian team invitation after a wonderful performance during the season.

During the 2006 season, many of St. Kilda’s players had one challenge or another due to the teams mounting injuries. This conferred so much responsibility on Dal Santo, but he went ahead to perform extremely well during this season. In 2007, with a new coach Nick was able to put forth an excellent performance that fetched him sixteen Brownlow votes for the year. He was also able to play his 100th consecutive game and was able to clinch fourth position in the Best and Fairest Awards for the club.

Nick also played a prominent role in the team that won the pre-season 2008 NAB cup which happened to be the third pre-season cup won by St. Kilda football club. He had a serious setback during this season when he was dropped as a result of inadequate performances. He took it as a challenge and was able to bounce back and make a good finish of the season. He was also able to make the All Australian team for the second time in his career. Nick renewed his initial contract with St. Kilda at the end of the 2010 season.

World Cup 2006 Preview – Portugal

Outright Odds: 22/1

Group D Winners: 5/6

After a disastrous 2002 World Cup, in which they finished bottom of their group following defeats by both the United States and South Korea, Portugal will be looking to finally live up to their potential on the international stage.

Qualification was a breeze. They remained unbeaten in their group and finished seven points clear at the top. Portugal meant business in this group, putting 11 past Luxembourg across two legs and hammering second-favourites Russia 7-1 at home.

The charismatic Luiz Felipe Scolari, or «Big Phil» to his friends, has built a new team to replace the ageing or retired underachievers such as Rui Costa, Joao Pinto and others although Luis Figo, now entering «veteran» status and out of retirement, will be present in Germany. Despite guiding Portugal to the final of Euro 2004 and emphatic World Cup qualification, the public are still not convinced he is the man for the job.

The team’s core is based around four players who won the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004. Defenders Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira and midfielder Maniche – now all at Chelsea and Costinha, now at Dinamo Moscow provide a solid base for the attack-minded stars to play around.

Attacking players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Simao Sabrosa and naturalised Brazilian Deco compliment the side perfectly and create numerous chances for striker Pauleta. The Paris St. Germain hitman overtook Eusebio’s record of 41 international goals with an impressive haul of 11 in qualifying, making him the European zone’s top goalscorer.

Manchester United winger Ronaldo could illuminate the finals with his skills and coveted step-overs. He weighed in with seven qualifying goals from midfield, raising his «Fantasy Football» stock considerably.

Portugal have all the makings of a World Cup winning side: a solid defence, exceptional quality and goalscoring potential from midfield and Europe’s deadliest striker in qualifying.

Their main downfall appears to be the goalkeeping position. Sporting Lisbon’s Ricardo and Quim from Benfica are both vying for the jersey although the supporter’s choice seems to be out-of-favour Vitor Baia. A veteran of the 2002 World Cup side, 36-year-old Baia was omitted from Scolari’s final 23 in the Euro 2004 squad.

Recommended Bet:

The underachieving squad from the past have almost all been replaced by a brand new crop of young talent. Old stagers Luis Figo and Pauleta will look for a final swansong, with the latter a sound each-way bet for top goalscorer status.

Don’t Think NOW, Think FUTURE – Think CRM

In a world where we tend to get blind-sided with our focus on selling tickets, it was great to meet a group of sports executives who correctly identified CRM as a catalyst for the future.

MESGO is an executive master’s degree in sports governance, supported by academic partners including Birkbeck London and the University of Limoges, along with sports partners including FIBA, IHF, ERA and UEFA. The course takes a multi-disciplinary approach to professional sport and examines economic, political and legal perspectives around issues facing the global sports industry. Earlier this year I was invited to join them and found myself in Paris at the Parc des Princes, home of Paris St. Germain (a treat in itself!) discussing the role of CRM in sport.

Most encouraging for me was that while none of the participants themselves had any great exposure to CRM, instead of identifying ticket sales as a key driver, they talked of legacy and the community. Of course, the more sports organisations engage with the wider community and use CRM to plan for the future, the more tickets they’ll ultimately sell anyway – but the fact that they started out thinking mid- to long-term made for an interesting workshop.

The sports industry is notoriously known for its short-term thinking – short-termism becomes sport-termism – we tend to focus on the next 3 points or the next event and with all the will in the world, a 3 to 5 year business plan ends up gathering dust. Indeed I once met a vastly experienced marketer who switched sectors from the telco industry to join a Premier League football club with a brief to help expand their brand internationally. She spent her first few months learning about the business and planning her assault on Asia (no surprise that the focus would be there) and then the season started and she found herself knee deep in perimeter advertising!

OK, so I’m generalising a bit, but I’d say that for every sports organisation that plans for the next 3 years, there are 10 or even 100 that don’t even plan for the next season! So in our CRM session we discussed not just segmenting and analysing data, tailoring personalised communications, acquiring email addresses and exploring social channels, we also talked about the importance of legacy and the community.

But what did that actually look like? Well, for the case study we used, the MESGO students proposed a digital communications schedule for a national sports team participating in an international biennial event. The schedule consisted of current match reviews and historical content but they also included future internationals and major cup competitions for the following 4 years. By putting a framework together, the students were saying: «you need to think beyond the now, you’ve got to think of what happens next».

The nature of the sports industry is such that we naturally have levels of brand loyalty that most businesses would die for – but when it comes to CRM, we’re way behind other industries. We naturally have the foundations for creating, maintaining and developing relationships with our customers – yet, many of us believe CRM is for everyone else. And we know that our businesses – established sports clubs, leagues and governing bodies – are going to be around for a long time, so why aren’t we planning for that future?

We are making progress, albeit slowly, but I for one left Paris and the glorious Parc des Princes feeling confident that in this group of 20 sports executives, CRM has the same chance as goal line technology. And they said that would never happen!

Football Stadiums of Istanbul

Turks are one of the nations that are fond of football. They try not to miss any match of their favorite teams, and are avid fans. It is by no means surprising, that in Istanbul there are many stadiums, and the majority of them correspond to the standards of the IOC. The most famous stadiums of Istanbul are Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, Besiktas Inonu Stadium, and Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

Besiktas Inonu Stadium

The project of this stadium was elaborated by an Italian architect Paolo Vietti Violi. It was opened in Besiktas district in 1947, and had 16,000 seats. Then its name was the Mithat-pasha (the drafter of the first Turkish Constitution) stadium, and Ismet Inonu, the follower of Ataturk and the second presdient of the Turkish Republic participated at the opening ceremony. In 1973 the stadium got its new name in honor of Ismet Inonu, and till nowadays it is called Besiktas Inonu Stadium.

The place of the construction is very convenient: the stadium was built on the spot of the Dolmabahce palace stables, near the Bosporus. It is, probably, the only football stadium, where the two parts of the world – Europe and Asia – are seen from. In addition, magnificent views of the Dolmabahce palace and mosque, and the Bosporus open from the upper grandstands of the stadium. After being reconstructed in 2004 according to the standards of the UEFA, the stadium got the highest category Elite.

In the nearest future there will be another reconstruction, when the stadium will nearly completely be pulled down, and a new stadium, with 42,000 seats and transparent slip roof, will be built. Only one grandstand will be restored and preserved – Eski Acik – for it is considered the architectural monument. In addition, architects plan to build near the stadium a 5 star hotel, congress-center, shopping center, and parking area.

This stadium is the host field of the Besiktas football team, but other clubs as Galatasaray and Fenerbahce played here. However, it remains a place, where Black Eagles (an unofficial name of Besiktas players) defeated the teams of Barcelona, Liverpool, Milan, and Paris Saint Germain.

Ali Sami Yen Stadium

This stadium, which hosts Galatasaray football club, was opened in 1964. It was named after the founder of this team and their first president Ali Sami Yen, who later became the President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey. Now the stadium has only 23,785 seats, and their matches of the European Tournaments Galatasaray holds in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium. However, Ali Sami Yen Stadium remains a place, where Galatasaray won Barcelona, Real, Manchester United, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas.

The unofficial name of Galatasaray players is Lions, and their fans name the stadium Cennehem (hell). Nowadays, Galatasaray meet their opponents with the motto Cennehem Hosgeldiniz, meaning Welcome To The Hell.

The Ali Sami Yen Stadium is in Sisli district, near the street, which leads to the Bosporus bridge. In 2007 Galatasaray started the construction of their new football stadium called Turk Telekom Arena. Besides the stadium with 58,000 seats, there will be built a covered sports hall with 15,000 seats, subway station, shopping center, and parking area.

Profile For Ronaldinho

This profile for Ronaldinho chronicles events from the start of the player’s career to the 2008 football season.

Affectionately known as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born on March 21, 1980 in Porto Alegre, Brazil and currently plays his club football for FC Barcelona in the Spanish La Liga and the Brazilian national team. The mid fielder’s club career began in 1998 when he played in the Libertadores Cup for Grêmio, his goal scoring ability and ball skills earned him a place in the Brazilian national team in 1999.

At the end of his season in 2001 at Grêmio, a number of clubs sought to lure him to their clubs; most notably Manchester united but the midfielder signed a five year contract with Paris Saint-Germain FC in France and moved there for the season beginning 2001-2002. He never ended his contract at PSG as his then coach Luis Fernandez claimed the player seemed more interested in the nightlife in Paris rather than in his football career. Having built up a reputation of performing against the big teams, the Brazilian earned himself a place in the hearts of many people around the world and in his country.

In 2002 destined to prove his status on the world scene Ronaldinho helped Brazil to lift the world cup with outstanding performances particularly against England. However, this didn’t do to much to enhance the profile for Ronaldinho as his performance was blemished by being shown a red card in the same match. Fresh from his world cup triumph, the midfielder returned to PSG and made it clear he wanted to leave. Having attracted the interest of the perennial Spanish giants Barcelona; on July 19, 2003, the maestro was acquired by the club for a tidy sum of £21 million.

Eager to prove his worth the Brazilian scored his first goal for the club in an exhibition game with AC Milan which was played in front of a crowd of 45,000 at the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. His dream start to the season was not to be as he suffered an injury and returned to action inspiring Barcelona to second place in La Liga. In the seasons that followed the midfield phenomenon guided Barcelona to back to back La Liga titles and the coveted Champions league title.

Ronaldinho’s profile and the Brazilian Team

After Brazil’s surprise elimination from the 2006 world cup in Germany, the midfielder placed third in the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year, an award he won in 2004 and 2005. In 2008 after a disappointing season plagued with injury for Barcelona, the Brazilian midfielder was linked to a transfer to AC Milan. Among his accolades are: The FIFA World Cup 2002, the FIFA U-17 World Cup 1997 and the Confederations Cup 2005.

Paris St-Germain: Rebuilding A Football Club

How do you lead a football club to success? Different people will have different views on the subject. Some will talk about harmony within the squad, while others will insist that discipline and shrewd player management are the keys to success. What very few will dare to disavow, however, is the importance of a budget in the modern-day version of the sport. Any club with money at their disposal will be halfway to a successful season, and a generous financial allowance can help a side rise from relative obscurity in to the limelight once again.

The latest example of this theory is Parisian side Paris Saint-Germain. Although their recent history has not exactly been devoid of success, the club – like many of its French League rivals – had lost much of the expression it once had on the European stage. Constant debt problems and changes in ownership risked stripping the club of the top-rank status it had possessed in the not-so-distant past, and their international achievements were modest at best – the team were usually booking shuttles back from Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris a few short months into the European trophy season.

From the bottom to the top

All that changed when a Middle Eastern conglomerate took over the club. In similar fashion to sides such as England’s Manchester City, the Arabs immediately set about wiping away PSG’s debt and turning it from a debt-ridden liability to the richest club in France. The new-found cash flow was then used to lure in several prominent international stars, who promptly flew to France and made their way from Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris. A record-breaking €147m was spent to bring names such as Jérémy Menez (formerly of Roma), Thiago Motta (formerly of Inter), Ezequiel Lavezzi (formerly of Genoa) or veteran Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (formerly of Milan) to the club.

Predictably, with such a vast array of stars at their disposal, it did not take long for Paris Saint-Germain to begin changing its fortunes in both the domestic and international competitions. For the past two seasons, the club has regained its stature as a force to be reckoned with in the European competitions, and has been drawing supporters both locally and internationally. Other teams now fear to making the journey from Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris, and the name ‘Paris Saint-Germain’ is once again on the lips of quality football lovers. Alongside Manchester City, the French club sits as a true testament to the power of a sound financial plan in the re-structuring of a football side.
